The goalkeeping position in Bayern Munich since Oliver Kahn’s exit has been permanetly rotated. The instability has affected the fortunes of the club like in other positions on the field.
Thomas Kraft who was designated as the number one keeper under the ex coach Louis Van Gaal, after the winter break, is scheduled to leave Bayern Munich at the end of the season. His contract will not be renewed because of discrepancies between Kraft and Bayern Munich. He wants to be the number one keeper but Bayern can not give him the guarantee. Kraft is already negotiating with Hertha BSC.
Joerg Butt, the new old keeper of Munich has extended his contract for another year till 2012. Butt is ready to play the nominal role as second choice, if negotiations with Manuel Neuer of Schalke comes to fruition.
The sport director of Bayern Munich, Christian Nerlinger, once said,Bayern Munich is not a training ground for young talents. It is no surprise that Kraft and former keeper, Micheal Rensing, could not stand the pressure in Munich.
Bayern need a stark keeper like Kahn once again. If they can secure the services of Neuer, it will bring back stability.
How can one explain the current performance of schalke in the Bundesliga ? They are top in the champions league but flop in the Bundesliga. Their last match against Kaiserslautern in Betzenberg was a 0-5 humilation by Kaiserslautern.
The champions league may be the zenith of football but the Bundesliga is the height of egalitarianism. There are no longer big or small teams. Schalke has learnt a bitter lesson.
The last time Schalke lost by 0-5 margin was 19 years ago against Eintracht Frankfurt.
Felix Magath, the manager of Schalke is disappointed at the performance of the team. He said,”it is not explainable how a team that played in the champions league with only a change of position, three days later perform so poorly.” He promised there would be consequences. Already he has shortened the christmas holiday of the players.
Manuel Neuer, the goalkeeper who picked the ball five times from the net has already sound alarm bells. He said,”if we play every game like this, we would be relegated.”
Magath is under pressure to take drastic actions to avoid a repeat performance next time. A look at their next opponents in the league are no push over. Schalke will play against Bayern Munich, Mainz and Cologne.
Schalke fans are losing their patience. Some fans on saturday were already calling for “Magath raus”(Magath must go)
Marco Kurz, the manager of Kaiserslautern complemented his players for a wonderful performance, “we played with so much passion and heart.”
History will judge Magath, if his Wolfsburg model will ultimately work in Schalke. Sadly, time is not on his side.
Oliver Kahn, the ex keeper of FC Bayern, is in the news lately. In an interview with Sport Bild, Kahn, thinks FC Bayern should start searching for an alternative keeper because the present keeper,Hans-Jörg Butt, is not getting any younger. He praised Hans-Jörg Butt, for a wonderful season so far.
Top on his list of Goalkeepers that is world class and good enough for FC Bayern is Gianluigi Buffon of Juventus Turin.
He thinks German keepers have immense potential but can not classify any as World class.
Buffon, is not the long term solution for FC Bayern. I am not surprised that legendary Bayern keeper,Sepp Maier, said Buffon is too old. I agree.
Kahn was not a World class keeper, when he came to FC Bayern. He had the potential to be one of the greatest German keepers during his days at SC Karlsruhe. He finally blossomed at FC Bayern. I am taking aback, when he said, “Bayern has the highest goals. If you want to achieve the goals, you need the best keeper of the world.”
Manuel Neuer, keeper of Schalke 04, is highly rumored to be the next keeper of FC Bayern. I expect Christian Nerlinger, manager of FC Bayern to look for a keeper in the mode of Neuer or Rene Adler. Micheal Rensing was a failed experiment. But Neuer or Adler could be the panacea for the Munich giants.
If Hans-Jörg Butt, continue to shine with every game, he could be in goal for another year. Then FC Bayern has enough time to search for a suitable replacement.
