Clemens Tönnies is the head of the supervisory board of Schalke. A position with responsibility and honour. His opinion on any issue is highly regarded and attracts attention.
Unfortunately, Tönnies latest statement at a trade and commerce meeting in Paderborn has generated a seismic shift against him. He said in clear terms, “Instead of increasing taxes, we should rather finance 20 power plants in Africa every year. Then Africans would stop cutting down trees and producing children when it’s dark.“ Interestingly, the audience applauded.
Was it a faux pas? Slip of tongue? Did he bother to comprehend the implications of the statement? Is he playing to the populist rhetoric with anti-Africa sentiments? These are questions that have not been answered. His racist tones caused a debate in Germany.
Sidney Sam is facing a difficult time at Schalke because he has become surplus to requirements. The new coach,Domenico Tedesco, informed Sam that he is not in his plans for the season.
The 29 years old Sam did not go with his team mates to pre season training camp in Austria.
Sam accepts his situation with the following comments in kicker, ” the coach wants to train with the players he aims to work with for the season. I have accepted the wish of the coach and i am concentrating on finding another club.”
Sam was sent to Darmstadt on loan last season. His contract with Schalke will end in 2018.
Schalke 04 are in talks with Chelsea on turning the loan deal of Ghana’s Abdul Rahman Baba into a permanent deal. However, the contract of Baba with Schalke will have a clause that will consider if he is 100% fit from his knee injury.
Baba suffered the cruciate ligament rupture of his knee during the Africa cup in January. His injury is so serious that he is not expected to recover before autumn.
Currently, Baba is undergoing rehabilitation in Schalke, where he is in good hands.
If the deal comes to fruition, Baba will have the chance to work with a coach, Markus Weinzierl, who trusts his talent and rejuvenate his career with Schalke. It is a win-win for both sides.
Nigeria’s Noah Sarenren Bazee has extended his contract with his current club, Hannover 96, for 3 years until 2021, despite interests from clubs as diverse as Bayern Munich, Bayer Leverkusen,Borussia Mönchengladbach or Schalke.
Bazee, who is currently sidelined with a knee injury decided to stay with the club because of the prospects of further development in the game. He said, “In Hannover, everything is working out for me. It is a top club in Germany. After the relegation to the second division, the club placed their trust in me and i like to pay back.”
For Hannover, the extension is seen as outcome of successful negotiations of Horst Heldt, the Sport director and Bazee’s agent Florian Goll. Horst Heldt, remarked , “we are happy that we can work together. In the past 12 months, Noah has indicated his big potential. He is hopefully at the beginning of a glorious career and he has not reached his peak.”
Bazee has played 18 times for Hannover, scored a goal and 8 assists.
He was recently invited by Nigeria’s coach Gernot Rohr, of the Super Eagles to play for Nigeria.
Rahman Baba got injured at the Africa nations cup in the match between Ghana versus Uganda last week in Gabon. According to a statement issued by Schalke today, “Abdul Rahman Baba’s injury to his left knee was found to be worse than was initially forecasted after his operation in Augsburg yesterday. It presented a picture of a complex rupture to his cruciate ligament along with tears to his internal and external cartilage.
Baba is expected to be on the sidelines for some months to recover from the successful operation.
Therefore, his loan deal with Schalke may have come to an end for this season.
The highly anticipated decision by FIFA over the status of Schalke’s Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting to play in the Bundesliga despite nomination from the Cameroon FA for the Africa cup has been resolved. In a tweet by Schalke late Friday evening, stated, “Choupo is eligible to play tomorrow. FIFA disciplinary committee followed the arguments of Schalke.”
Schalke maintained in their argument that after Choupo-Moting was nominated in the preliminary list by Cameroon FA, they did not get further confirmation from Cameroon, if, the attacker is on the final 23 man list for Africa cup.
The decision by FIFA has erased the confusion and drama over the consequences for Schalke,if, Choupo-Moting was sanctioned. Schalke is plagued with injuries and Choupo-Moting’s services is highly needed at the moment.
Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting explained why he opted out of the Africa nations cup. However, there is confusion over his playing status as the Bundesliga resume tomorrow.
Schalke sports director, Christian Heidel, said at a press conference today, “it states in FIFA statue that when a player does not honor an invitation, then he is not allowed to play for his club during the duration of the tournament. Now, the question is, was Eric Maxim Choupo.Moting invited ? We are of the opinion that he was not invited and therefore should not be sanctioned.”
Heidel also informed Journalists that the club is in constant talks with FIFA and expect a decision latest tomorrow or thereabout. Schalke believe that Choupo-Moting’s case is different from Joel Matip, another Cameroonian, who refused to play for the Indomitable Lions.
It is interesting to note that Choupo-Moting did not announce his retirement from the Indomitable Lions. Let us await the decision of FIFA in relation to the Cameroon national team on the issue.
